Gaucher disease is caused by an enzyme deficiency which means that certain tissue that is normally broken down within the body becomes stored, typically within the spleen, liver and bones. This results in swelling of these vital organs, haematological problems, severe bone pain and possibly fractures. In a small number of cases Gaucher patients display neurological symptoms which in a very rare form can be fatal in infants.

The Gauchers Association (G.A) was formed in 1991 by patients and patients families to provide information and mutual support.

The designation by the Department of Health of four centres in the UK for the treatment of Gaucher disease was a very important step in ensuring that all patients in the UK are seen by experts of international renown. This designation puts an end to patients living with these rare conditions being misdiagnosed or receiving inappropriate treatment and ensures that any newly diagnosed patient will swiftly be seen by a doctor who is well experienced in their disease.

The G.A is extremely proud of its close relationship with doctors, nurses and all their colleagues at the National Treatment Centres. The collaboration between doctors and patients and our Association has borne considerable fruit.

The Association is keenly aware of the areas of unmet medical need. Whilst current therapies are successful in treating many of the visceral symptoms of the disease the current treatments do not help in their neurological manifestations.

The Association can only function through the support of its members and friends. If you would like further information or would like to support the Gauchers Association please do visit our website at www.gaucher.org.uk or contact me at 3 Bull Pitch, Dursley, Gloucestershire GL11 4NG.
